What Do Custom Steel Railings Cost? A 2026 Guide for Vancouver & Portland Homeowners

Custom railings aren’t a catalog item, so the honest answer starts with a range rather than a price. Here is the range, and here is exactly what moves it.

The short answer

Most of our railing projects land between $5,000 and $15,000 installed, in the Vancouver WA and Portland OR metro.

That covers the great majority of what we build for homeowners and custom-home builders: a stair run, a deck or balcony guard, a landing, or some combination. A small interior handrail is below that range. A full floating staircase, a long frameless glass run, or a large automated gate sits above it.

What each material costs, relative to the others

Ranking is more useful than a per-foot number, because per-foot pricing falls apart the moment a run has corners in it. Cheapest to most expensive:

1. Steel picket & horizontal-bar railings — the workhorse, and the most affordable custom option
2. Cable railings — a step up, driven by posts and terminations
3. Gates & fencing — depends heavily on width and automation
4. Glass railings — premium material, premium hardware
5. Curved runs & floating staircases — the top end, and a structural job rather than a railing job

The five things that actually move the number

Linear footage — but less than you think. A long straight run is efficient. Cost is concentrated at the ends and corners, not in the middle, so 40 feet of straight deck rail can cost less than 20 feet with four corners and two level changes.

Corners, transitions and level changes. Every corner is a fabrication operation and an install operation. Every transition from stair to landing is a fitting. This is usually the single largest difference between two jobs of the same length.

Material and style. See the ranking above. The jump from steel picket to frameless glass is the biggest single step available.

Finish. Powder coat costs more than paint and is what makes an exterior rail survive the Northwest. On an interior rail it is a style choice; on an exterior rail we treat it as required.

Site conditions. Access, what you are mounting to, and how true the existing framing is. A stair that is out of square across its run costs more to rail than one that is not, because the parts stop being repeatable.

Timeline, since it affects the decision

Plan on 4 to 8 weeks from deposit to installed. Steel lead time runs 1 to 2 weeks, fabrication happens in our shop, and powder coating turns around in under a week. Terms are 50 percent down, 50 percent on completion.

Why we scan before we quote exact

Most shops measure by hand and hope it fits. We 3D-scan the space with a Trimble X9 and cut on a Bodor fiber laser, so parts are cut against the space as it was actually built rather than as it was drawn.

That precision costs slightly more up front. It removes the failure that costs the most: a railing that arrives not fitting, and the rework, callbacks and schedule slip that follow. On a stair, a half inch of accumulated error across the run is the difference between an install and a refabrication.

Is custom worth it against a cheaper welder?

If you want something that fits clean, passes inspection the first time, and still looks right in fifteen years — yes. If you want the lowest number on the page, we will not be it.

The cheapest bid is frequently the most expensive job, because the cost of a railing that does not fit is not paid in the quote. It is paid in the second trip, the second set of parts, and the finish carpenter waiting on you.

How to get a real number

Send photos of the space, or the plans if it is new construction. We come back with a rough number, usually within one business day. If the number works, we scan the site and turn that into an exact, itemized quote.

The site visit comes after the rough number — not before it. No point spending your afternoon on a scan for a project that was never going to pencil.
